duo with Jacob Koller (piano)
trio with Jacob Koller (keyboards) and Hernan Hecht
(percussion/electronics)
Formed in Banff, Canada in 2000, the core duo of Brian and Jacob
plays original compositions bridging a chamber-like aesthetic
with improvisation, while pushing the boundaries of instrumental
technique. Since Brainkiller's inception, many influences have
become a part of their unique language. A grant in 2003 enabled
the addition of percussionist Corey Fogel to form a trio focused
more on textural and electronic sounds for a west coast to gulf
coast tour. Reflecting their open approach, Brainkiller has
engaged in free improvisation with contrabass virtuoso Mark
Dresser, opened for the underground noise band Wolf Eyes,
performed in university concert halls and new music festivals.
The first duo recording is called "Brainkiller." The trio with
Hecht will be touring Mexico in November and the US in March
2008.

brian allen mexican quartet
with Armando Martin (guitar) Arturo Baez (bass) and Hernan Hecht
(drums)
Making their debut in Merida, Yucatan Mexico, this quartet was
formed in conjunction with a grant from Meet the Composer Global
Connections for Brian to collaborate with Mexican musicians on
his compositions. Heavily rock oriented, the quartet creates
collages of melodies and rhythms, challenging perceptions of
time, awareness and reality. Also highly visual in nature, the
music presents different multi-angled views of the same object,
simultaneously diffuse and direct like a child's mobile.
An upcoming DVD and recording is planned. The Quartet page
offers MP3s, videos, artwork and more.

with Tony Malaby (tenor saxophone)and Tom Rainey (drums)
The trio released "Synapse" in 2006 in conjunction with an
extensive tour of the southwest over two weeks. Challenging
conventional function and expectation, melodies, textures and
rhythms emerge and vanish, with the music weaving effortlessly
in a multi-dimensional spacious swirl between the three like-
minded improvisers.
“Their mode of expression is ruggedly free-form, but with a high
degree of collective sensibility.” Nate Chinen - New York Times
"The two horn players exhibit a natural ease with multilinear
improvisation, whether creating instantaneous structural gambits
for one another or simply blowing full-speed ahead in tandem"
Peter Margasak - Downbeat
"Backbeats surging out of nowhere, spars of skittering melody,
rising tenor waves stopped short by cymbal scrapes and plaintive
gulps.” Clifford Allen - Paris Transatlantic
